Kernig’s Sign
The Kernig’s Sign is designed to detect the presence of meningitis in patients who present with neck pain or headache. It’s important to note that this test has been reported to be of low sensitivity. Therefore, a negative test does not exclude the presence of meningitis.
With the patient in the supine position, flex the hip and knee to 90 degrees and then gradually extend the knee. The test is considered positive if the patient reports that their neck pain or headache worsens with knee extension.
