Ankle Clonus
The Ankle Clonus test is used to detect the presence of an upper neutron involvement.
To check for Ankle Clonus, move the foot up and down a few times and then sharply dorsiflex the ankle and maintain the pressure.
Normally, there is no response, but occasionally a few beats of alternating flexion and extension of the ankle may occur. However, sustained clonus such as 5 or more beats is considered abnormal and indicates upper motor neuron involvement.
Based on the information obtained from this screening assessment, together with the patient’s history and other clinical findings, you may decide a more detailed neurological examination is required.
